Mural Painting at Marina Bay Sands

On 16 March 2011, 4 of our art club members, Wei Suen, Jia Min, Fathiah and Wen Wen collaborated with the students from Siglap Secondary Secondary on a mural painting project at Marina Bay Sands. This mural painting is part of a special item to launch the Mens Fashion Week 2011. The design is conceptualised by our Art Teacher cum HOD of Special Projects, Mr Saiful Idris and completed with the special assistance of Mr Mazlan, Subject Head Art Department Siglap Sec Sch.

Hehe, western art has been to the SYF exhibition last wednesday, on the 18th of August 2010 :)
There are some pictures here. ( Its not really much, cause some galleries couldn't have phototaking :l my apologies ! )
But.....our school SYF art work was put in the exhibition ! And its the students from chinese seal carving's that did the hardwork :D. Congrats (: !

Reflections by graduating members from New Media Art Group

Ashley (4A1)

It has been an interesting and fun-filled journey for me in Art Club. I have made a handful of new friends. When i first joined Art Club which was in Secondary One, my first impression of Art Club in Damai was that it was boring and that we had to draw and paint everyday. But i was wrong. Sometimes we went out of school to do CIP or sometimes we did Photoshop. My impression of Art Club changed from that point on. Also, by me joining art Club, my skills in drawing has improved and i can now draw things that i thought i could not draw. Now i am in Sec 4A1 and i am glad that i chose Art Club as my CCA.

Asriah (4A1)

I only started to join art club last year. I've been wanting to join art club since i first step into damai sec. I really had fun doing new stuff that i have not tried before. Making new friends is fun too, especially art club camp, i start to be closer to my friends. Ms Candy is friendly too, she always been friendly towards me.

Jordan Lee (4E6)

Art Club is indeed the best CCA to me in my 4 years in Damai as there are nice teachers in it, fun activities and i made new friends. Through the years, i learnt chinese calligraphy and also Photoshop. I will miss the moments in Art Club when i graduate this year.

Goh Kiat Seng (4E3)

I have been in the Art Club for 3 years now. The life in Art Club is very fun and enjoyable. I have learnt alot on how to create an art piece by using different types of art material. Like using watercolor to paint and using charcoal to draw. I even learnt how to edit pictures using Photoshop. The art Club Camp last year is also fun-filled. This is my last year in Art Club and i am glad that i chose Art Club as my CCA.

Pauline Tan (5A1)

These past five years, i had many fun and enjoyable times with my fellow art club friends. Art Club gave me a chance to take part in competitions. I enjoyed the outings that were organised by the art club committee members like going to the musuem and cip. This enabled me to be exposed to different type of art and experiences.

Koh Xing Ying (3E1)

It is an honor to me able to participate in such a huge event like the SYF. I've truly enjoyed myself during the process of preparing our syf seal carving item.It was no easy task completing our final piece.All thanks to our instructor, Mr Lee and my team mates, we were able to complete a wonderful final artwork. We have recently receive the news of being in to the second round, I hope we are able to get some awards to do our school proud. Go, Damaians!

Priscilla Shih (3E4)

It is a rare opportunity to be able to participate in syf. Even though the theme was a bit hard, my grp members and I spent a lot of time researching and brainstorming on what is related to the theme. But under the guidance of our instructor, Mr Lee, we are able to complete the final product. Even though we had stayed back almost every friday to rush out carving the stones before the dateline, but after seeing the end product, I think the hardwork and efforts put in were worthwhile. For all the efforts we had put in, we are in for the second round of syf, I hope that each one of us can do our very best in creating the best end product!

Huang DaJing (4E1)

This is my second time participating in SYF, it is a different experience as compared to what I experienced in sec 2. This time round, we are less dependent on our instructor as we had a better idea of the things that we are suppose to do and??it is more challenging for us as we are determined to achieve a better result in the competition. Although we had to stay back for extra sessions to complete our work, I find it quite enjoyable, and I had a good time working with my teammates and teachers too. Completing the artwork with my friends gives me sense of achievement and I think that this is a very good experience for me. Ps: Thank You to Mr Lee for guiding us throughout!:)

Chia Chin Wei (3E1)

I felt honor that I could participate in this competition. Although I find it difficult to finish carving the seals and brainstorms for new ideas, I truly had lots of fun during the process in finishing up the work. After everything were done, I am very satisfied with the end product and everyone in the team had also put in a lot of effort. Thus it is a great experience for me to participate in this competition. :)

Cheryl Ong (3E4)

This is the first time I participated in the SYF competitions. I find that the process is difficult and tiring. We took a long time to complete all the seals. It took a lot of hard work to finally finish our art piece. A lot of research was done on the theme itself. It took us a long time to find the right pictures and the right phrases to suit the theme. But in the end the end product was great and it was worth all the time effort and troubles. Hopefully we can win a prize in SYF competitions.

Yee Chin (4E2)

This is my last year of taking part of the seal carving SYF. I felt that I am lucky as my batch can participate 2 SYFs instead of 1. This time round we did put alot of effort on the carvings by carving more difficult pictures and words. We also put in a new color combinations in it too. In this SYF, i felt that the bonds between friends are much closer as we spent quite alot of times doing the project together. Upon hearing that we had gotten in the first round of audition, my friends and I were so happy about it. It is because we really did our best in it. I hope that this year we could achieve the gold with honour award because we think that we really deserve this pay back. This will not only bring the glory to our school but also our very own Art club.

Hsiao Ju Ling (4E3)

The stone carving that we carved represents the friendship and cohesiveness among different countries. We, Damaians divided ourselves among different groups and each group played their roles in this sculpture. Every group carved theme word and these words displayed our keen interest in participating in the SYF.

Tiffany Soh (4E1)

I am very glad to be involved in this year's Art SYF, especially i had truly enjoyed myself this year working hard for OUR GOAL. :)

Everyone dedicated their heart and souls into making fine and exquisite pieces of seals. We aimed for perfection in our work - From the search of profound words to how we should align the seals in the box, we gave in our very best. We all shared a common goal, that is: To be awarded Gold for this SYF.

I really would like to express my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to our great Coach, Mr Lee. He has been a great coach, guiding us and even cracking jokes to help us de-stress...Chinese Calligraphy enables you to develop many virtues such as Patience, and the thirst for knowledge. I've developed an even deeper interest for Chinese Culture. Thank you Mr Lee!

The kite-making was fun, Last time i didn't know how to create a kite, but now i know. The instructer was very patient teaching us instead of scolding us etc. the trip was very fun although i'm the only sec 1, but i get to know some of the seniors . And the other one is creating ur own personal badge i've lots of fun creating it. I hope to have this kind of'outing again as it was well worth cos we learn many things.

reflection for yog CAN! festival kite workshop

On the 27th of february, 7 of our members went to the YOG CAN! festival. they had fun there.. did u noe tat they even appeared on the newspaper?? anyway, these are their reflections below^^

i'm kee wen wen... my reflection on 27-2-10 sat... on 27-2-10 9 of us from art club went to learn to made a kites...it was fun and very very hot day!!...and the place was very nice. over there we can made our own bag , kites , badges and other. I even design my own badges... it was a very tired and fun day...it so fun!!! i have a very good memory over there..

I really enjoyed the trip to marina barrage and the CAN! Create kite workshop, although the weather was very hot. We learnt how to make kites, which I didn’t have a chance to do it before and it seems very easy to do it, but when I tried it, it was actually so difficult! And I always ask my other friends to help me out, and they were very willing to help me. From this, I learnt that we can also build up our teamwork and friendship. But I think that the time management for this activity is not as good, as it starts at 12.30 to 2.30, which eats up our lunch time, and we have to eat after that. But overall, I liked the trip!

I feel that this workshop is very enjoyable and meaningful as we can have the chance to participate in the creating kite competition which is held in preparation for the upcoming 2010 YOG (169 days to the YOG=169 kites) It was a bit tiring, but I had a lot of fun during the workshop, as this is the first time that I can create a kite and decorate it, as well as I can write down my wishes towards Singapore being in the YOG. I hope that I can have another chance to take part in similar events.

I was very excited because this was my first time taking MRT trains without parents' company, first time making badge and kite. I was perspiring continuously because the weather was hot and sunny. Luckily there were free canned cold coke! Making badge was very fun and easy, just draw on a round coloured paper and the people at there would help us make it into a badge. I have been wanting to make my own badge for a long time and finally got the chance to do it! Making kite was very difficult because there were many steps to follow and the string kept getting tangled. I did not know how to untie the knots, so had to ask many people to help me. I think this workshop is very meaningful because it allows us to experience things which most of us have not tried before and it allows us to have more resilience during the kite making.

ATTENTION TO ALL MEMBERS IN NEW MEDIA ART GROUP

There will be NO CCA on 24 February and 3 March.

You are supposed to go out and take photos for submission for BIODIVERCITY PHOTO COMPETITION during these 2 weeks.

CCA on 10 March (Wednesday) has been changed to 8 March (Monday) due to camps. Please meet in Computer Lab 1 at 3pm to do online submission for the competition.

Get ready your photos in soft copy.

If you do not submit your entry, you'll not get attendance for 24 Feb, 3 March and 10 March for the obvious reason that you do not have to attend CCA because of photo shoot outside school.

REMINDER: PLEASE CHECK THE BLOG REGULARLY FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS. Mr Raj and Miss Lee Ley Har has informed the whole school that CCA announcements will be filtered during morning assembly. Okay guys, here's the info for the upcoming camp from 23rd to 24th Nov:

You guys would have to pay $6 for the camp (for the FAS students its Free Of Charge) for lunch on both days.
but for those who is under FAS, did not turn up for the camp without informing the committee and does not have valid reasons, will have to pay back the $6 when school reopens

Next, cca t-shirts it is COMPULSORY for everyone. Its white, dri-fit and the normal round neck. You guys will have to pay $14 (excluding the FAS students who has to pay $5). Sizes are as below;

The 36, 38...... is the size of our school's new P.E t-shirt.

Pls don't choose the wrong size alright. Cause' its either gonna be baggy or totally sexy :D

This is IMPORTANT! Those who are unable to attend the camp due to valid reasons are to provide us with a letter that contains REALISTIC reasons.

Those who will be going overseas will have their parents' write a letter on where and when you will be away. Include your parents' contact no. please.

For those who really unable to pay for the cost of the camp or the t-shirt, pls look for Ms Candy, Dajing or Shirlene.

Also, members who did not attend the meeting, pls be reminded to collect your consent forms for this camp in Ms Candy's 'pigeon' hole.

Dear Art Club members,

i woluld like to say a big thank you to all the members who have put in a lot of time, effort and also sweat in helping out with the mural painting project, especially those who came back on 3rd June to do the touching up till 6 pm.

I think we have learn something from the project as we work with our own members and also with members from other CCAs. Please do see this as a valuable experience.

Although i hate to mention this, there are a handful of our members who are either sitting somewhere eating, drinking or playing with their handphones.

Please do not feel discouraged by their actions and i assured you that these members will be dealt with accordingly.

We should have a strong teamwork and should also coporate with each other have dicilpine. i had fun time working with my cca mate and there more bounding between each other.i had fun time paintig with my cca mate.

we should have good leadership skills to control situations and also have diclipine,it could be used to improve my confidence whebn mixing with ppl.we are more bounded,and we understand.the fun part was that have to mix around with new people and also CCA mate.

It was my first time painting a mural. I was tasked to help the Guzheng to do their painting ut Ms Candy asked me to help the Dance instead. I had so much fun painting with the other Art members. I realised that teamwork is important. We need to work together in order to paint well and also to finish up the work on time. We were really concentrating when doing the painting as we did not want to make any mistakes on the wall. Other than teamwork, this activity create an opportunity for me to build up friendship. Before this, I did not interact much with my fellow Art members. Usually, I would just smile to them. But during the mural painting, I had no choice but to interact with them. They are friendly, actually. Overall, everything turned out well. Although I felt lethargic after the painting, I felt really satisfied with my work! I knew I had done my best.

Today we went for mural painting again and i have learned something new from this session. I think that to touch up the art works require a lot more patient than painting it, we have to be extra careful in order to cover the small details that were left out during the painting without destroying the other parts of the work. Being organised, knowing our next step,what we are going to do, will also increase our efficiency in completing the paintings.I think that being patient in things that we do, not just rushing, trying to get the work done fast and getting organised, will help us to achieve better results in whatever things that we do. Today's session was an enjoyable one, i had fun painting, working with the members and also running around trying to get the stuff:]

I think that the qualities necessary in order to do a good job in the painting are, teamwork, determination and the ability to listen to instructions and to act according to them. These are important because only with good teamwork we would be able to work efficently and fast and we won't be in each others' way. By being determined, we are able to persevere throughout the whole project no matter how difficult it is or no matter how many obstacles we have to go through. Also, by having the ability to listen to instructions and act according to them helps by having less mistakes and lesser touch ups to do in the end. These qualities mentioned can help in projects in groups and sometimes in life. We have to be determined, be able to work in a group well which means good teamwork and also listen and act according to instructions given in any situation either in school life or while at work, these qualities help us to get through life and its obastacles. the mural painting build stronger bonds between our friends and fellow art club members. throughout the whole project there were many obsatcles which needed teamwork, at these times it is but a must to work to together and be willing to. We helped each other in different situations and in different ways. I enjoyed the touching up process mainly because during that period of time me and my group members working on that particular wall at Blk 718 had lots of fun. although it was hot under the sun and lots of hard work had to be put in we were all glad that each of us were there to cheer ourselves up rather than being alone at home with nothing to do. In all, i enjoyed mural painting and hope that we could do it again.

I think being serious and responsible are necessary for mural painting. We must be serious to prevent painting the wrong colour on the wall and we must reach our blocks punctually. We student must be serious when we are in the Science Laboratory and must reach the place where my friends and I have decided to meet punctually.The mural painting heps me in building friendship when other pupils involved in the mural painting talk to me and we chat about our school life. The part of the mural painting process that I had enjoyed the most was the 1st section of mural painting, because I was not familiar with the road direction, I did not know how to go to blk 725. Although I had a hard time walking around the blocks to find blik 725, I learnt to be independent and tried best to find it. Luckily, in the end, I found it!

On 25th may,I was tasked to help the NCC members to do the mural painting.I didn't did anything as I was unsure about the programme with the team. I felt that I was left out of the team because most of them are boys as I don't mix with boys frequently. If I was given another opportunity,I will try my very best to co-operate with the team.

I think that teamwork is the most important quality that could help us to do a good job in the painting. If there's teamwork, everyone would have been assigned to do something rather than not doing anything. The quality above can help me to work as a team when there is a assignment assign to my group so that I could have my work done quickly. One part of the mural painting that I had enjoyed the most is that even though that is tiring to paint the wall, but I have a lot fun painting it.

1) I think that determination and patient are the qualities that is necessary to do a good job in the painting.

2) Determination can be applied in our studies such as daily practice in our work to get good grades. Being patient is also important as it keeps a person to keep going on.

3) The mural painting have help me by making more friends in my CCA group and building teamwork such as helping out each other in the painting.

4) The part that I enjoy the most in the mural painting is the painting of the wall. Because I had never painted on a wall.

Through the Mural Painting project, i think that teamwork is the most important.With everyone helping out, the Mural was completed in a very short time.My friend and I was assigned to help out the Boy's Brigade with their Mural.When we reach there, the Mural was almost complete. Some of the boys werehelping out while the others are resting. Later did i know it was because they tookturns to help out instead of crowding together to do the Mural. I think that they havevery good teamwork.Teamwork is very important. Whether it is school works, projects or even when playingbasketball, for example, everyone needs to help out to achieve good results. Even if onlyone person did not do anything to help out, nothing can be achieve.Some of people from Boy's Brigade are our friends but there are also others that we do not know. Despite that, we work together to finish the Mural. Not everyone was good atpainting but everyone was glad to help out. From the Mural Painting Project, we can learna lot from other CCAs. Overall, I think the Mural Painting project was very interesting andit helps us to learn from the other CCAs.

To say the truth, it was actually my first time painting a mural. Ever since my primary school's art club , I have not attempted to paint on walls in void decks. Definitely, this is a first time for me! During the process of painting, everyone had to keep up the work. If one of us just went there to rest around and chat, the mural painting would have taken a much longer time. So in all, to say, teamwork was real important. However, leadership qualities were also learnt . Whenever the group needs directions in whether to paint a darker colour or lighter one, someone could give some advice or directions. It turns out to be helpful indeed when we asked one another about how to paint the characters. The qualities learnt could be applied in our daily lifes and what a valuable experience we had. I worked along with my CCA group members while painting the mural. I had not known much about them since they were actually secondary ones. I had thought that we would not get to interact with one another. But, we actually kept on steady conversations reagarding on who were we going to paint with and who was going to take charge of painting the background and so. It came as a surprise that they were really chatty and humorous. I enjoyed their company and the teamwork we had as a group. I wish that some day we can work together as a team again. In celebration of Damai Secondary's 15th Anniversary, fifteen murals have been drawn and painted in HDB blocks located nearby the school. In each of these murals, a CCA is assigned to paint the mural at hand, and each CCA is supervised by at least two art club members. Through my participation of this event, I have discovered that the most important qualities are teamwork and friendship. Priscilla and I have been assigned to block 717, where the design we are to supervise was swimming. The CCA group we have been assigned to was the Drama Club. We were all strangers to each other, but during this, Priscilla and I have gotten along well with these Drama Club members. Even though we did not see it, some sort of friendship was established, and we worked well through the process of painting (though we were only doing touchups, I enjoyed spending time after school to foresee this activity).
Teamwork is an important quality whether it is in or out of school. We need to build this team spirit: anything we need to do such as project work or even surviving marooned in an island would end up in disaster if we do not work together. Teamwork does not exist without friendship, because it would be very hard to work with a person if you do not get along well with them. With these qualities, personally I learned to be more social with people who I did not know, and that it taught me that it is possible to work together if we all have the task set in our heads.
One thing I enjoyed about the painting process was the chance to pick up a brush and color in between the lines of the mural. It may seem rather ridiculous, but I never really got the chance to paint the walls of my own home because I've been thought that I would create a grand mess. If there would be a chance for another mural painting, I know I would be interested

I think that teamwork is very important in order to do a good job in the painting. The success of the mural painting was largely because of our good team-work. We must have an organized co-operation and combined effort to have a good job in the painting.
Teamwork is also the spirit of caring for others in your group and to help them, to support them and to win together. It can be done in our daily lives by a combined effective action of a group.
The mural painting has helped to promote friendship and teamwork in my CCA group. As we helped each other when they needed our help. And now, we are strong ties of friendship between the members of the club.
I truthfully enjoyed painting the mural pictures and it yields high interest and creativity

Although the mural painting activity was a tough one, but it all ended well. To tell the truth, I really liked it a lot, especially the murals and I had a lot of fun. I think that the mural paintings can successfully ended because of the teamwork between the Art Club members and the various CCA groups. They helped each other in order to finish the job ASAP. On the first session, Tiffany and I were assigned to Choir, however, we were told to help with the Netballers. I think it’s because they have more murals to paint than the Choir. We really enjoyed helping the Netballers. The most important part in this activity is teamwork. It allows people to work together and get the job done as fast as possible. If people are not working individually instead of as a whole, they will not get the job done and not as successful as expected.
The last session, I helped out with the ‘Dancers’ in their murals. They need a quite a few people to help out because they have two murals and there are a few of them to finish up with the work. The other Art members helped out too. I really enjoyed in helping with the Dance Club members, as they were very kind towards students from other CCAs, concentrate on their work, and did their very best in completing the mural. I really admire the team spirit in the various CCA groups that I worked with. They were very focused in their painting and they helped each other. I hoped that we will have another chance to work with the various CCAs again. :D

I think a lot of team work is required in order to do a good job in painting, mural painting is not like drawing or painting on papers were individual could complete easily, it requires everyone in the team to cooperate and help each other as there are many occasions during painting requires team work, like the distribution of jobs or help in getting equipments for each other.
This activity create a great opportunity for different CCAs to build up friendship and team spirit among themselves. In order to do the painting well, everyone have to put in their best effect which is the spirit we should have in whatever things we do. I enjoy this activity a lot especially during the drawing section,we have to be very careful with the proportion when we transfer the drawing on to the wall and it is much more difficult as compare to drawing on papers

Damai is celebrating it's 15th anniversary. Therefore, Art club and other CCA groups has participated in the Mural Painting.
I have participated in this event and find that it is extremely heart-warming. This event has allowed the Damians to get together to work as a team, make our neighborhood a better place to live in and change the image of the Damaians (in a more positive way) in the eyes of the public..
In order to do a good job in painting the Murals, I feel that we should have qualities that are also stated in our school mottos. And it is: FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY.
The qualities that I have mentioned above is applicable in my life and studies.
For example, Team work. It is a must to have them. As we must work in teams with our classmates during our PW lessons or when doing our projects.
During my participation in the event, I worked with the Girl Guides. They are a bunch of friendly, hard working and delightful girls. They did their job with responsiblity,and we were able to finish off our mural in just 2 sessions with no complications! I am honored to work with them.
This mural painting experience allowed me to gain more friends and allowed me to work better as a team.
This event is a extremely delightful and unforgettable experience for me and it has proved to be a successful way of gathering the spirits of the Damaians and
allowing us to work better together as a team.
I feel that the school should organize more of such events that benefits both our school and the others.
I truly enjoy this whole experience!

Its the 15th Anniversary Mural Painting. I participated in the Mural Painting with other CCA groups we are allocated to. As such, I am partnering with Mavis to work with the Drama Club to complete the mural painting of swimming at blk 717.The first day of the mural painting was quite fun as we had to work together, even if we did not knew each other. We started by decided who shall do which colour. After that Mavis and I would have to do the touch-ups. Even though we had no teachers to supervise us, we completed the task with the given paint in a few hours time. The second day was truly a tiring day. We had to paint the mural under the direct sunlight and it was really tough. Despite the heat, we also tried to finish the task. However, till about 4 plus pm, the teacher-in-charge told us to stop work and pack up even though the time is not up, as it is really very hot out there. The teacher-in-charge is afraid that we might get heatstroke, therefore we are able to pack up early. Through these two days, I really enjoyed working with the drama club. I also learnt that, anywhere we go, teamwork is very important. Without teamwork, we will not be able to accomplish the task. Therefore, we must learnt to work with others no matter where we are.
